Beryl Bernice Fowlie February 13, 1929 - January 28, 2013

Beryl Fowlie passed away January 28, 2013 in Monterey, California surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. She was 83 years old.

Beryl Bernice French was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 13, 1929 to Herbert Fredrick French and Dorothy May French. Known as “BB” to her family and close friends, she, along with her brother Wayne, grew up in the Detroit area during the Great Depression. They visited their grandparents in Canada often and even moved there for a brief time during the depths of the Depression. She also witnessed the spectacular Dresden Meteorite Fall while spending a warm summer evening in the yard with her family, an event she often recounted.

After graduating from high school, she received a degree from the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing. Although she had known her husband since childhood, it was while a nurse there that she fell for her future husband, Dr. Jack A. Fowlie. They married in 1955 and immediately decamped to Hawaii where her husband was stationed in the Navy. They returned to California in 1958 making their home in the foothills of La Canada where she would spend the rest of her life.

She loved to travel and she and Jack would trample through the ancient ruins of CentralAmerica, Peru and Southern Europe on various trips. Family camping trips to Baja and the Western US were made all the better by her fantastic meals and adventurous spirit. Later in life she traveled with friends to all seven continents, including Antarctica on a Dennis Prager cruise. But the place she liked best was right here in La Canada. Driving to her home high in the foothills, she would often say how much she loved these mountains and couldn’t imagine
living anywhere else.

She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from Cal State Northridge and worked as neonatal intensive care nurse and public school nurse with the LAUSD. She was a member of the La Canada Presbyterian Church for 54 years, and a member various clubs including Las Rigde-Adas. She volunteered at local hospitals and assisted with the La Canada Rose Parade float a number of times.

She leaves behind her son Jack, daughter Karen, son-in-law Ron and two wonderful grandchildren, Bethany and Cassandra.
