Big wins on court for Glendale High, Glendale college tennis

BOYS’ TENNIS

Glendale 14, Burroughs 4: In a Pacific League-opening match Tuesday, the host Nitros turned back the Indians, who won the league title last season.

Glendale (2-0) got sweeps in doubles from Mike Akopians and Davit Ismailian (6-2, 6-3, 6-0) and Mher Krikor and David Cassaburi (7-5, 6-2, 6-0).

The Nitros started their season Monday with a 15-3 nonleague road win against Alhambra. Glendale got a sweep in singles from Arin Meserkhani (6-2, 6-0, 6-0) and doubles sweeps from Akopians and Ismailian (6-2, 6-2, 6-2), Krikor and Cassaburi (6-0, 6-4, 6-0) and Matt Davidian and Patrick Co (6-3, 6-4, 6-0).

Crescenta Valley 17, Pasadena 1: The visiting Falcons began their season Tuesday with a Pacific League victory. The Falcons got sweeps in singles from Albert Chtchyan (6-0, 6-1, 6-1) and Jonathan Frink (6-0, 6-0, 6-0).

Hoover 17, Canyon Country Canyon 1: Visiting Hoover began its season Tuesday with a nonleague win. Emile Ohanyan of Hoover swept his three sets (6-0, 6-0, 6-1).

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, Ventura College 3: Host Glendale earned a Western State Conference South Division win Tuesday, sending Ventura to its first division defeat since 2006.

“This is a great win today” Glendale Coach Bob MacKay said via the college’s Twitter account. “Ventura has dominated conference for the last nine years and we have had many years where we have played them close, but this is a big step for us in the right direction.”

The Vaqueros got singles victories from Dat Le (6-0, 6-0), Dro Dermegerdichian (6-0, 6-2), Cameron Braun (6-4, 6-2) and Santiago Segovia (6-0, 7-6(7-5).

In doubles, the Vaqueros got wins from Le and Son Tran (8-2) and Braun and Clayton Pauff (8-3).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 7, Ventura College 2: The visiting Vaqueros picked up a Western State Conference South Division victory Tuesday, Glendale (6-1, 2-1 in the division) picked up singles wins from Meghedi Mooradian (6-3, 6-2), Alexandra Amor (6-1, 6-1), Amy Shigenaga (6-4, 4-6, 6-1), Ashley Sumudio (6-2, 6-1) and Ayaka Takeuchi (6-2, 7-5). Glendale got doubles victories from Amor and Viktoriya Shumakova (8-6) and Mooradian and Sumudio (8-1).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Cerritos College 9, Glendale Community College 1: The Vaqueros (5-6) fell Wednesday in a nonconference contest.

AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Mount San Antonio College Combined Events Challenge: Vaquero Quaid Vuncannon of the men’s team finished eighth in the two-day event in Walnut on Friday and Saturday. Vuncannon registered 5,625 points.

On Friday, Vuncannon accumulated 2,612 points. In the 100-meter dash, he clocked 11.82 seconds to garner 687 points, followed by a mark of 4.89 meters in the long jump (361 points), 10.06 meters in the shot put (489), 1.70 in the high jump (544) and 54.21 seconds in the 400 (631).

On Saturday, Vuncannon finished with 2,913 points covering five events. He had a mark of 17.12 in the 110 hurdles (612), 44.13 meters in the discus (749), 3.15 meters in the pole vault (393), 44.62 in the javelin (509) and 4 minutes 44.87 in the 1,500 (650).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 72, L.A. Valley College 60: The Vaqueros closed out their regular season Saturday with a Western State Conference South Division road win. Glendale (21-5, 9-3 in the division) received 24 points from Gor Plavchyan and 21 from Santiago Grady.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

L.A. Valley College 74, Glendale Community College 52: Visiting Glendale wrapped up its season Saturday with a Western State Conference South Division road defeat. The Vaqueros (15-13, 6-6 in the division) got 16 points from Jessica Sanchez and 15 from Samantha Pyros.
