[UPDATED 9/24 11:09 a.m.] A driver was being hoisted out of her car Thursday morning after crashing 50 feet into an excavated construction site in downtown Glendale, police said.

Around 9:25 a.m., police and fire officials were called to Central and Wilson avenues, where a van had blown through a red light and struck the vehicle heading southbound on Central Avenue, which plunged 50 feet into the construction site, landing upside down, said Glendale Police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

The van came to a rest after colliding with a second car, which was parked. The van driver, who was cooperative and did not appear to be impaired, was not injured.

The driver who was hoisted out of the car was responsive to fire personnel, but the extent of her injuries was not known. Police officers arrived on scene first, and held the driver’s hand until fire officials arrived.

Meanwhile, “lots of workers” were on site, though it was not immediately known if any were injured, Lightfoot said.

Central Avenue was closed between Broadway and California Avenue, officials said on Twitter.

By 11 a.m., construction work had resumed.
