DVD Review: Two Oscar winners on the same release

Share

This is probably the first home video release to come out two days after its content won two Oscars. “Big Hero 6” was named Best Animated Feature; the disc also contains the Animated Short winner, “Feast.”

“Big Hero 6” comes from a non-Pixar computer animation team at Disney, but Pixar’s influence can be felt throughout (as it can in nearly every CG-animated feature, from any studio). Still, the titular robot is physically about as far from Wall-E as possible. Looking like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from “Ghostbusters,” he is not exactly what you’d call graceful in his motions. Scott Adsit’s voice work never lets us forget that we’re watching a machine, yet the character still generates emotional reaction. (Think of Wilson the Volleyball in “Cast Away.”)

The film’s requisite life lessons are a little different than in most kid-friendly films. For the first half, the villain is grief and depression. (The second half has a more conventional villain.)

Even viewed on DVD, the transfer looks immaculate, which is pretty much standard for CG animation at this point. For extras, the Blu-ray has the above-mentioned “Feast”; two making-of shorts of 15 minutes and seven minutes; a truly worthwhile two-minute theatrical teaser trailer; and 10 minutes of deleted scenes with introductions (all of which is in HD). Sadly, on the stand-alone DVD edition, the deleted scenes and the longer making-of are omitted. Given that the prices are only $10 apart — which currently translates into under $5 at some retailers — the combo pack is handily the better deal.

Big Hero 6 (Walt Disney Studios, Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, $39.99; DVD, $29.99)
