First ‘wiki’ bill to pass focuses on pets
The first-ever crowd-sourced bill was approved this week by the state Assembly with a 72-0 vote.
The process to put together “wiki bill” AB1520 was thought up by Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake) and came to fruition by opening it up for anyone to edit online.
The bill would give pet owners new measures to provide for their pets once an owner passes away, including not immediately putting an animal to sleep.
“Too often, special-interest groups draft legislation behind closed doors, keeping the public in the dark,” Gatto said in a statement. “In contrast, crowdsourcing this bill on the Wiki platform allowed for a fully transparent brainstorming, drafting and editing process that incorporated ideas from a large group of people.”
