Flintridge Prep graduate Ramses Barden has ties cut with New York Giants

After testing the free-agent waters, Ramses Barden returned to the New York Giants and signed a one-year, $780,000 deal on May 23.

The Flintridge Prep graduate and 6-foot-6 wide receiver’s New York reunion didn’t last long as he was let go with four other players in the team’s last round of cuts Saturday morning.

The move comes after the four-year veteran enjoyed his finest statistical season with 14 receptions for 220 yards in a career-high 12 games in 2012 when the Giants were hit by injuries.

While a disappointment to Barden, the move couldn’t have come as a complete surprise as speculation on his future with the club began to ramp up after he sat out the team’s final preseason game with the New England Patriots Thursday with a “nagging knee injury,” according to NewJersey.com.

In an interview with the New York Post published Aug. 17, Barden was asked if he thought there was room for him on a roster with veterans Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Louis Murphy and promising youngster Ruben Randle all ahead of him on the depth chart.

“That’s not my decision,” said Barden, who had five receptions for 38 yards in three preseason games. “I know I’m going to make room for myself wherever I’m at. I carve out my own niche. I’m confident that I’ll be here. I plan on being here. I am here. I’m concerned about — excuse me, not even concerned — I’m focused on today.”

Only time will tell if the third-round and 85th pick in the 2009 draft will land somewhere else, as many teams could be looking to bolster receiver corps before the season kicks off.

Last year continued the trend of Barden improving in every statistical category in each campaign, with most of his exploits coming in a nine-reception, 138-yard game against the Panthers in week three.

For his career, Barden has 29 receptions for 394 yards and 19 first downs, but no touchdowns.
