Performances are in the limelight at year’s end
As the academic year draws to a close, the music and dance departments at Glendale Community College stage some of their most anticipated events.
Students in the various music performance programs, after a semester of learning, practicing and perfecting their music, are able to perform in front of real audiences.
The Glendale College Community Orchestra, conducted by music instructor and 2005 Grammy Award-winner Beth Pflueger, will give a concert at 3 p.m. May 15 in the auditorium. The program will feature Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” The college’s Concert Singers will perform with the orchestra. Tickets are $10, $7 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the door. Pflueger also coordinates the Applied Music Program and the recitals given by the program’s best instrumentalists and vocalists. Applied Music is a four-semester program that provides private instruction along with participation in a recital class and a performing ensemble. The spring recital is at 7:30 p.m. May 27 in the auditorium. Admission is free.
Jayne Campbell will direct the College Choir, Chamber Singers and Opera Vignettes in a concert at 7:30 p.m. May 21 in the auditorium. The program features choral works and opera excerpts. General admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors.
Peter Green will lead the Concert Singers in a performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22 at the First Lutheran Church, 1300 E. Colorado St. The singers will be accompanied by the GCC Orchestra in a program that will feature Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Admission is $10, $7 for students and seniors.
There are two music recitals, one is the piano recital coordinated by Green and includes performers from the advanced piano classes at GCC and Green’s private studio. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 23 in room 211 of the auditorium. Music instructor Theodora Primes will lead the Chamber Music Recital at 4 p.m. May 31 in room 211 of the auditorium. The recital will showcase various ensembles from the chamber music course. Admission to both recitals is free.
The GCC Jazz Band, led by Craig Kupka, has two upcoming shows. The band will perform with the college’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Clare Delto, at 7:30 p.m. June 4 in the auditorium. The second show is just the band performing at 4 p.m. June 5 at in the auditorium. Admission for either concert is $7, $5 for students and seniors. Also known as the Big Bad Jazz Band for its outstanding musicians, the band performs the music of composers such as Gordon Goodwin, Count Basie, Billy May, Tom Kubis, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and many others.
Tickets for all of the music events may be purchased at the box office one half hour before the performance.
One of the longest-running college events at 42 years, Dance Production 2011 will be presented May 24 to May 29 in the Dance Theatre in the Sierra Nevada Gym. It features choreography and performances by students in the dance production and jazz performance skills classes and is directed by Dora Krannig and Lynn McMurrey.
Shows are at 8 p.m. on May 24, 12:20 and 8 p.m. on May 25 and May 26, 8 p.m. on May 27 and May 28 and 2 p.m. on May 29. Admission is free. No children under 5 admitted. Seating is limited and on a first-come first-served basis. Early arrival is advised.
ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW OPENS IN GALLERY
The annual Student Art Show runs May 11 through June 3 in the GCC Art Gallery, located in the Library Building.
Faculty-selected works by students in the various art programs are displayed. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Exhibited pieces include paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, 2-D and 3-D design, jewelry and traditional and digital photography. Admission is free and open to the public. A reception for the artists will be from noon to 2 p.m. May 11.
CERAMICS SALE RAISES FUNDS FOR ART PROGRAM
The Spring Ceramics Sale, a fundraising event for the GCC Ceramics Department, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. June 4 in the Student Center Conference Room 212.
A large selection of handmade functional and decorative items made by students in porcelain, stoneware, raku, majolica and earthenware will be available for purchase.
Proceeds from the sale go toward equipment and supplies for the department as well as bringing guest lecturers and workshops to the GCC Ceramics Studio.
