Five of the six tennis players from Glendale Community College encountered their first taste of postseason competition as freshmen.

Though none of the members from the Glendale men’s and women’s tennis teams advanced to the state tournament following the second day of the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Regionals in Ventura County, the Vaqueros will at least have the luxury of having gained some much-needed experience to help them heading into next season.

Two men’s doubles teams and one women’s doubles team and a singles player from Glendale all had their runs end Friday.

Glendale’s women’s doubles team of freshman Viktoriya Shumakova and sophomore Ally Amor fell to Diablo Valley’s Chelsea Corby and Suzanne Lin, 6-1, 6-2, in a round-of-16 match at Buena High in Ventura. In a round-of-32 contest earlier Friday, Shumakova and Amor teamed up to register a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Claudia Astudillo and Estafania Toscano of American River at the same venue.

Glendale women’s Coach Deo Sy said Shumakova and Amor ran out of steam Friday after playing their fourth doubles match in a little more than 24 hours.

“It’s a tough loss and they tried their best,” Sy said. “They just couldn’t adjust quick enough during the first round of their last match. They fought off five straight match-point attempts, so they hung in there

“In the first match, they were confident and aggressive. They attacked the net. It was a tough first match, but they got through it.”

In men’s action, Glendale’s freshman doubles team of Dro Dermegerdichian and Oleg Simonyan suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to top-seeded Loveveep Singh and Adam Duong of American River and Cameron Braun and Clayton Pauff, also freshmen, fell, 6-1, 6-2, to Irvine Valley’s Steven Le and James La Fond. Both matches were played at Oxnard Tennis Center.

In a singles match, Glendale freshman Hosep Orojian lost a 6-2, 6-4 decision to fifth-seeded Scott Gray of Fresno City at Pacifica High in Oxnard.

Glendale men’s Coach Bob MacKay, who led the Vaqueros to their first Western State Conference championship since 2005, said his players likely learned a lesson.

“They have learned a lot and they have a better understanding of what it’s like playing at the junior college level,” MacKay said. “So, for them, it’s a great experience.

“There’s a lot of great players out there. Now, well look to see how our players look to take that next step.”
