Glendale Community College women’s golf sitting in fourth

All of the momentum the members of the Glendale Community College women’s golf team accumulated from winning a second straight Western State Conference championship didn’t carry over into the first round of the Southern California Regionals on Monday.

As far as Glendale college Coach Greg Osbourne is concerned, there’s still time to regain it.

“I’m just so disappointed with our scores today, and I have no idea what happened,” said Osbourne, whose team finished with a 332 and is in fourth place entering today’s final round at San Luis Rey Downs Country Club in Bonsall. “Nothing changed coming in.

“I think we will rebound. Maybe it’s just the first day and us being in a cloud.”

The Vaqueros, who won the Southern California Regionals last season, have a bit of ground to make up if they are to advance to the state tournament for the second season in a row.

Irvine Valley shot a 311 to take the lead, followed by Mount San Jacinto (328), Palomar (330), Glendale (332), College of the Canyons (335) and Saddleback (360). The top two teams and top 12 individuals from the field of 36 in the Southern California Regionals advance to the state tournament, which will be held Monday and Nov. 13.

Glendale received a four-over-par 76 from Pattraporn Silawanna and a 79 from Vicanda Ma. Thanawan Sriratchaya registered an 87 for Glendale, which got a 90 from Chardae Hudson. Silawanna is in third place and Ma is eighth entering today’s second round, which will begin at 9 a.m.

“We are going to have to hit the ball better,” said Osbourne, whose team finished runner-up in the state tournament last season in Hanford. “We have to do a better job at putting the ball in play because I saw a couple of shots from our players that went out of bounds for penalties.

“I’m shocked we are only four strokes out of second. I’m happy Pattraporn and Vicanda did well.”
