Glendale Sports Roundup: Glendale High boys’ basketball upsets Burroughs
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Glendale 53, Burroughs 45: The Nitros delivered the upset of the night in holding the visiting Indians to a season-low 45 points in Pacific League play Friday evening.
“I thought we played well, but we were also fortunate to catch Burroughs on a cold shooting night,” Glendale Coach Steve Snodgress said. “We played so hard on Tuesday and let it slip away [in a loss to Crescenta Valley]. This time we were fortunate and got the win.”
The victory improved Glendale’s record to 8-13 overall and 3-6 in league, as the Nitros handed Burroughs (15-6, 7-2) only its second league loss.
Junior Eddie Uluchyan helped lead the Nitros to victory in the final minute by hitting a three-pointer, which was followed up by two free throws from the guard.
Arthur Terzyan paced Glendale with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Stephan Arekelyan also scored 11 points, Raffi Jivalagian added 10 points and 12 rebounds and Tyler Lousararian tallied eight points.
Junior forward Gevork Sarkissian also filled in nicely for injured forward Alex Miralis, who was out with a concussion.
Sarkissian tallied six rebounds and was part of a defense that held the Indians’ high-scoring twosome of Amaad Wainwright and Rashid Ewing to 22 points combined. The duo entered averaging 43 points per game.
“We know what those two guys are capable of doing. They’ve lit us up before,” Snodgress said. “I was proud of the defense we played. It’s nice to get one.”
Pasadena 63, Hoover 59: The visiting Tornadoes fell short of a big upset Friday in a Pacific League contest. Hoover (12-9, 3-6 in league) got 17 points from Teo Davidian, 15 from Argin Sarkisian and 12 from Kevin Nazari.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Crescenta Valley 58, Muir 30: Ella Stepanian finished with 17 points, seven assists and four steals Friday to lift the visiting Falcons in a Pacific League contest. Crescenta Valley (17-6, 8-1 in league) got 12 points and eight rebounds from Alisa Shinn.
Hoover 36, Pasadena 35 (OT): The visiting Tornadoes posted a Pacific League victory Friday. Hoover improved to 5-9, 3-6 in league.
Burroughs 56, Glendale 53: The Nitros almost upset Pacific League first-place Burroughs on Friday evening at Glendale High, but a mid-court three-pointer gave the Indians the win at the end of overtime.
“I was proud, I was happy,” said Glendale Coach Tania Adary, whose team fell to 9-14, 3-6 in league. “They are a first-place team and we came in ready to play.”
The Nitros had their last-second three-point attempt at the end of regulation go awry, but were fouled on the play only to miss the subsequent three free throws.
Kristina Sahakian led Glendale with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Mariel Telebrico had 14 points and Kailyn Gideon added nine points and four boards.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Flintridge Prep 4, Webb 0: The Rebels got two goals from Jillian Brady and one each from Alexis Gordon and Cassie Redding in Friday’s Prep League win.
Flintridge Prep improved to 3-1-1 in league.
Crescenta Valley 11, Muir 0: The Falcons rolled to victory Friday afternoon, improving to 6-7-1, 6-2-1 in the Pacific League.
Hannah Weingarten had two goals and two assists for CV, which received a goal and two assists from Arden Gonta, three assists from Grace Keller, two goals and an assist from Kelsey Boller and two goals each from Emily Johnston and Sabrina Sessarego.
Samantha Phinney added a goal, as did Lauren Busta.
Glendale 0, Burroughs 0: The Nitros netted one of their best results of the season on Friday with a Pacific League tie to improve to 3-8-3, 1-7-2 in league.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Crescenta Valley 1, Muir 1: The Falcons came up short of making up ground in the Pacific League standings as they settled for a tie on Friday afternoon.
Jason Winicki headed in a Chris Sinani assist for a 1-0 lead before the half, but Muir rallied for the tie.
Adan Martinez had three saves in goal for CV (17-3-3, 6-2-1 in league).
Pasadena 3, Hoover 2: The Tornadoes gave first-place Pasadena a stiff test, but fell to 1-8 in the Pacific League on Friday.
