Home Grown patriotism at Fiesta Days

Clear skies over the long Memorial Day weekend drew record crowds to the multiple activities planned by the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and other organizations as part of the chamber’s annual Fiesta Days celebration.

“It was a phenomenal weekend,” said Pat Anderson, president and chief executive of the LCF Chamber of Commerce, who was seen at nearly every venue throughout the weekend. “I owe a huge thank you to our board, my incredible staff — Starr Frazier and June Beemer — and to our many, many volunteers.” She also credited Fiesta Days Chairman Barbara Marshall and her committee for the successful outcome.

The gatherings began Friday night with a successful casino night fundraiser at the Community Center and ended Monday with a lively, late afternoon rock ‘n’ roll concert in Memorial Park.

In between, locals enjoyed a French toast breakfast cooked up by the Kiwanis-AM club, a vintage car show, an outdoor showing of the animated film “Frozen,” and a summer whites picnic event at Lanterman House. There was also the al fresco dinner and fireworks show that blanketed Memorial Park with people of all ages Sunday night, a stirring memorial service Monday which was largely in the capable hands of local youth, the Crescenta-Cañada’s annual Fiesta Days Run/Walk event and the patriotic parade carrying the theme “Home Grown.”

Anderson said that Saturday night’s showing of “Frozen” drew “about 1,800 people, triple the number we normally have at that event,” and that sheriff’s and fire officials reported that more than 2,500 people filled the park Sunday for the fireworks display.

“Everyone seemed to be happy and having a great time,” Anderson said. “At the end of it we all went home tired, but it was a happy tired.”
