Instructor gets three years for lewd act with student

A Hoover High School freshman who was sexually assaulted by a former instructor on campus addressed him in a Pasadena courtroom Wednesday moments before he was sentenced to three years in prison.
She said she now suffers from post-traumatic stress and will likely have ongoing issues with trusting people.

Delvon Jackson, 38, pleaded no contest this week to a single felony count of committing a lewd act with a minor stemming from last October when he was employed as an instructor at Hoover High’s Public Safety Academy, a program aimed at coaching teens interested in careers in law enforcement or fire service.

Jackson reportedly asked the victim, a 14-year-old student of his, if he could be her second boyfriend and asked her to remove her shirt.

Jackson was also accused of licking her neck, a claim that was later backed up by DNA evidence, said Deputy District Atty. Alice Kurs.

The victim, who went by Jane Doe in court to protect her identity, spoke just before Judge Stan Blumenfeld handed down the sentence, saying that she’s receiving counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder, has problems sleeping and has since changed schools, leaving behind friends she’s known since kindergarten.

“I started high school as an outgoing girl with many friends looking forward to a new chapter in my life. Then all that was taken away by Delvon Jackson,” Doe said. “It was hard to look at myself in the mirror and accept this is something that I have to deal with for the rest of my life. I should be enjoying my freshman year of high school, but that’s not possible.”

She said she was looking to be inspired under Jackson’s guidance, but that trust was betrayed and she will have difficulty putting faith in people again.

Doe was with her parents in the courtroom, while Jackson’s family was not in attendance.

“I hope that he never causes this pain (for) someone else again,” Doe said. “Delvon Jackson, I’m the last girl you will ever manipulate and was it worth it?”

Jackson didn’t make eye contact with Doe during her statements.

Jackson has been in jail since his arrest date and has 408 days credit for time served and good conduct.

He will have to register as a sex offender upon his release, is barred from ever owning firearms and will have to pay restitution to Doe’s family once an amount is set, Blumenfeld said.
