Former chair of Glendale YMCA Bob Driffill dies

Robert “Bob” Charles Driffill, a Burbank resident and former chairman of the Glendale YMCA, passed away on July 14. He was 66.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1947, and grew up in Sacramento, graduating from Mira Loma High School. Upon graduation, he attended American River Community College on a baseball scholarship. He transferred to Azusa Pacific University and graduated with a degree in psychology, social science and history while playing outfield for the Cougars from 1968 to 1970.

Following graduation in 1970, he got a job at the Glendale YMCA as its athletic director, starting the Y’s baseball program. He continued to work for the Y in different capacities and was named chairman in 1994 and, according to his family, made youth education his top priority.

Driffill retired in 2005. Still devoted to helping youth, as well as being involved with the activities of both of his sons, he became involved with the California Amateur Hockey Assn. He started as a team manager for his sons, and worked his way up to board member, club president, Southern California president and California treasurer.

He was also involved with many community events and groups in Glendale including serving as president of the Glendale Character and Ethics project.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Carol (Passon) Driffill of Glendale; children, Hilary Stutzman of Hutchinson, Kan., Brittany Leslie of Oakland, Andrew Driffill of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Justin Driffill of Burbank; his parents, John and Barbara Driffill of Sacramento; siblings, David and Connie Driffill of Colusa, Calif., John and Maria Driffill of Mexicali, and Mike and Nancy Knee of Sacramento. He is also survived by six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave., Montrose.
