A 38-year-old transient was arrested shortly after allegedly igniting a small brush fire in the hills above the Glendale Sports Complex on Friday, police said.

Arriving firefighters crossed paths with Marlon Mejialopez, who was handed over to police and confessed to starting the fire, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

The 30-foot-by-30-foot blaze was reported in the hills above the sports facility and below Camino San Rafael at 12:55 p.m., Lorenz said.

Eighty-two firefighters worked to extinguish the flames by 3 p.m., he said.

No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported, Lorenz said.

Mejialopez was arrested and charged with a single count of arson on Tuesday, according to spokesman Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

He was being held in lieu of $50,000.
