Update: Relative arrested in beating death of elderly man in Glendale

A 22-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly killing an 84-year-old relative who was beaten to death in his Glendale apartment early Monday, according to police.

It’s the first reportable homicide in Glendale since 2009, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said

James Adrian Sanchez has been arrested in the killing of the man, identified by the L.A. County coroners’ office as Ruben Sanchez.

The younger Sanchez was booked in the Glendale City Jail in connection with the murder. No bail has been set, and an arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 21.

Ruben Sanchez lived alone on the first floor of the apartment building, while his family lives on the second floor. James Sanchez, who was located in El Cajon, did not live with his family.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, a family member of Ruben Sanchez called 911 and reported that their grandfather may have suffered a gunshot wound and was bleeding profusely inside his apartment on the 1800 block of West Glenoaks Boulevard, Lorenz said.

Police arrived and found no evidence of a shooting, but discovered Ruben Sanchez had been beaten in what they initially thought was a burglary.

Ruben Sanchez was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

Lorenz said the arrest of a family member should quell concerns that the attack was random or a targeted burglary.

“I think realizing it’s a family issue and not a stranger danger puts people at ease,” he said.
