Robert Cartwright, Cole Currie lead All-CIF honor roll

For the Flintridge Prep boys’ basketball team, it enjoyed another successful season by winning a league title before advancing to the CIF semifinals and qualifying for the state tournament.

Two of the reasons were the performances put in by Robert Cartwright and Kareem Ismail. The duo was rewarded for its contributions Monday, when the CIF Southern Section office unveiled its All-CIF awards.

Also garnering All-CIF accolades were Cole Currie of Crescenta Valley and St. Francis’ Kyle Leufroy. The CIF Southern Section office unveiled the first teams for all 12 divisions.
Currie and Cartwright were named to the first team and Ismail and Leufroy earned spots on the second team in their respective divisions.

Currie, who was named All-Area Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year, was named to the Division I-A first team after averaging 19.1 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the Falcons (23-9, 9-3 in the Pacific League for second place). Currie, a senior guard and the all-league co-player of the year, made 81 three-pointers.

“In getting All-CIF, Cole just puts another check mark in his list of accomplishments,” Crescenta Valley Coach Shawn Zargarian said. “He went out there and was solid for us because he could do a lot of different things.”

Cartwright, a junior guard, flourished once again for Flintridge Prep. He helped Flintridge Prep win its 11th Prep League championship in the last 12 years before leading the Rebels (22-7, 8-0) to the semifinals in Division V-AA under coach Garrett Ohara.

Cartwright averaged 18.9 points, 4.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals per contest en route to being named the league’s most valuable player.

“As a junior, to be recognized like that shows that he was successful in making himself and the team better,” Ohara said. “He knew how to get the guys involved. He knew what we needed for him offensively and defensively.”

Ismail, a senior center for Flintridge Prep, averaged 10.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He earned a spot on the all-league first team.

Leufroy, a sophomore guard at St. Francis, averaged 18.1 points per game. He received All-Mission League first-team honors after helping the Golden Knights finish 17-14, 4-8 in league for fifth place. St. Francis advanced to the Division III-A quarterfinals.
