Flintridge Prep, Sacred Heart reap all-league softball honors
The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
TOLOGS GET ALL-LEAGUE NODS
Though the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball team didn’t appear in the playoffs, a group of Tologs still put up respectable numbers throughout the season. The statistics caught the attention of the six Mission League coaches, who named Kelly Jacobs, Kelly Trueblood and Sumner Hanula to the all-league team.
Jacobs, a junior left fielder, earned a spot on the first team after batting .466 overall with two home runs, 11 stolen bases and 16 runs batted in. In league, she batted .353 with five stolen bases and five runs batted in.
“She was easily our most consistent hitter,” said Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Kirk Nishiyama, whose team finished 9-13, 3-7 in league for fifth place. “She had a great year and she’s everything you want in a player.”
Hanula and Trueblood were selected to the second team.
Hanula, a junior center fielder, batted .426 overall with six stolen bases and seven runs batted in. In league, she hit .407.
Trueblood, a senior first baseman, hit .416 overall with eight stolen bases and 17 runs batted in. In league, Trueblood hit .314 with five stolen bases and nine runs batted in.
“Sumner was our best defensive player and, when she did well, we did well,” Nishiyama said. “Kelly did a lot of things well, but she always brought that leadership to the team.”
TWO REBELS PICK UP ACCOLADES
Though the Flintridge Prep softball team had its share of struggles, two of its players received All-Prep League recognition after terrific individual seasons.
Sophomore third baseman Chelsea Johnson and senior catcher Rachel Simon were each selected to the first team, as voted on by the league’s seven coaches.
Johnson put up some mind-boggling numbers that included a .882 slugging percentage. She batted .559 (19 for 34) with two home runs and 13 runs batted in. She also scored 13 runs, stole 13 bases and contributed five doubles.
Simon made the transition to catcher from first base this season. Simon batted .459 (17 for 37) with three doubles and 12 runs batted in.
“[Johnson] provided a great presence at the plate,” said Flintridge Prep Coach Julie Jaime, whose team finished 3-16, 3-9 in league for sixth place. “She grew defensively, too.
“With Rachel, she semi-volunteered to be our catcher and her honor was well-deserved. It’s great to see the league recognize both of them.”
HUH TIES FOR 19TH AT MEMORIAL
John Huh, a Crescenta Valley High graduate and rookie on the PGA Tour, finished in a six-way tie for 19th at The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide on Sunday at Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio. Huh carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round and finished with a four-round score of 290.
Huh, who earned $72,540, finished with 12 birdies and 47 pars. He began the tournament Thursday with a 71 before recording a 74 and 76 on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Huh was slated to participate Monday in a section qualifier for the United States Open, which will be held June 14-17 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. However, he withdrew from the competition.
