Falcons, Knights continue to get good results
SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, in its 69th year, meets Tuesdays at the Elk’s Lodge. The following are odds and ends from the fourth meeting of the year.

Things are looking up for Crescenta Valley through the first month of the season. The Falcons improved to 3-1 on Friday with a 35-0 Pacific League-opening victory against Hoover at Moyse Field. The Falcons also received CIF recognition, as they grabbed the ninth spot in the latest CIF Southern Section Southeast Division poll.
Crescenta Valley Coach Paul Schilling said there are some similarities between last season and this season.
“We are 3-1 now, just like last year,” Schilling said. “Then we went to 4-1 before finishing 4-6.
“We want to try and finish [the regular season] strong and not just start strong.”
Schilling was encouraged by what transpired against Hoover.
“There were no turnovers by either team,” Schilling said. “We got some great play from [wide receiver] Nick Ruiz, who had seven receptions and three touchdowns.
“To be able to go 2-0 in league would be awesome.”
Crescenta Valley will next meet rival Muir in a league game at 7 p.m. Friday at Moyse Field.
KNIGHTS REGROUP
AGAINST WILDCATS
St. Francis Coach Jim Bonds came into Friday’s nonleague home contest against West Ranch possibly expecting another high-scoring affair. Instead, Bonds and Co. rolled to a convincing 35-0 victory to improve to 4-0 and move up a spot to No. 4 in the latest CIF Southern Section Western Division poll.
St. Francis avenged a 35-34 loss to the Wildcats last season at Valencia High. On Friday, St. Francis limited West Ranch standout running back Jeff Coprich to 47 yards in 12 carries after he rushed for more than 400 in his first four contests.
“We knew that they have a good running attack,” said Bonds, whose team posted its second shutout of the season. “We got them into a lot of three-and-outs and we played with a short field all night.”
Bonds also praised and joked about junior kicker Mark Verso, who has given the Golden Knights a boost on special teams and is a reigning All-Area first-team pick after scoring a team-high 22 goals for the school’s soccer team last season.
“He’s been great for us,” Bonds said. “He comes to practice on Wednesdays and we fly him in for the games Fridays.”
BRUINS’ ANNOUNCER MEETS CLUB
For the last 19 years, Chuck White has had a bird’s eye view from the press box at the Rose Bowl and court side at Pauley Pavilion serving as the public address announcer for UCLA football and men’s basketball, respectively. White was the guest speaker at Tuesday’s meeting.
White’s voice has echoed throughout the two historic venues and is one that collegiate sports fan around Southern California can identify.
When the UCLA football team moved from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to the Rose Bowl starting in 1982, White entered the business.
“It was a big opportunity for me to be the PA announcer at the Rose Bowl and a big moment for me,” said White, who graduated from UCLA in 1981 after starring on the men’s golf team for several seasons with Corey Pavin, Brad Sherfy and Tom Pernice. “It’s a dream and something I love doing.
“It’s great doing it if you love football and you see young men playing as hard as they can.”
White said he worked as a boat captain for the Jungle Cruise attraction at Disneyland in which he’d provide comical descriptions of the ride and scenery. A Disney representative heard White and suggested he get involved in doing voice-overs and possibly commercials.
White took the advice and did some commercials before landing in his current line of work.
