Sports Roundup: Etienne sinks huge win for Glendale Community College men’s basketball

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 72, Citrus College 69: Jalen Etienne made a three-pointer with less than one second remaining to lift the visiting Vaqueros to a Western State Conference South Division victory Wednesday.

Etienne made a pair of free throws with about 40 seconds left to knot it at 69.

Glendale improved to 18-4, 6-2 in the division.

Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin picked up his 588th career victory, all at Glendale since 1979, and tied him for fourth all-time in the state.

“We were down by four points with less than two minutes left and we needed to get some defensive stops,” said Beauchemin, who got 18 points from Etienne and 16 points and eight rebounds from Emmett Duvall. “We did a real good job on our last possession.

“It turned out to be a high-ball screen and Jalen backed up and made a real long three-pointer. It’s a hard place to play, but we did a good job.”

Emerson Castaneda and Gor Plavchyan finished with 11 points apiece for the Vaqueros.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale 55, Citrus College 49: Three Vaqueros scored in double figures to lead Glendale to a Western State South Division road victory Wednesday afternoon.

Guard Elsie Mejia guided Glendale (14-10, 5-3) with 16 points and five assists, while forward Samantha Pyros chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds and guard Mary Karapetyan tallied 12 points.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 2, Chadwick 1: The Rebels picked up a key Prep League win on Wednesday afternoon thanks to goals by freshmen Jillian Brady and Maia Cohen. The Rebels improved to 8-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in league.

Arcadia 4, Glendale 0: The visiting Nitros suffered a Pacific League defeat Wednesday. Glendale dropped to 3-10-3, 1-8-2 in league.

Hoover 9, Muir 0: Remi Miller led the way for the Tornadoes with a hat trick in a Pacific League victory Wednesday afternoon.

Emily Sawitskas added two goals for Hoover, which improved to 3-7-1 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 7, Burbank 0: The Falcons drubbed the Bulldogs on Wednesday on the road, as Sevag Hamamah and Matt Ryan tallied two goals each with Hamamah adding an assist.

Chris Sinani had a goal and two assists, Justin Wright added a goal and an assist and Brian Ju had a score. Crescenta Valley, which got four saves from goalkeeper Adam Martinez, improved to 18-4-3, 7-3-1 in league for 22 points.

Arcadia 3, Glendale 1: The Nitros dropped a crucial Pacific League match on Wednesday at home. With the loss, Glendale dropped to 4-5-2 in league with 14 points, falling to fifth place, while Arcadia climbed into fourth with 16 points at 5-5-1.

Muir 3, Hoover 2: The Tornadoes lost a Pacific League road match Wednesday, falling to 5-12-1 and 1-9-1 in league.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 55, Burbank 49: The Falcons kept their hold on second place within the Pacific League with a home victory Wednesday evening.

Eric Patten led the Falcons (17-8, 10-2) with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore guard Arin Ovanessian scored all 12 of her points in the second quarter.

Junior Berj Krikorian added 10 points, while Kyle Currie hit two big threes in the fourth in totaling up eight points.

Muir 60, Hoover 54: Kevin Nazari had 14 points and Argin Sarkisian added 13 on Wednesday for the visiting Tornadoes in a Pacific League game. Hoover dropped to 13-10, 4-7 in league.

Loyola 73, St. Francis 61: A strong effort by the Golden Knights came up short in Mission League action Wednesday evening.

Junior guard Kyle Leufroy paced the Golden Knights (15-8, 4-5) with 28 points, while Evan Crawford added 14 points and John Carroll chipped in 10 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 57, Arcadia 55: The Nitros notched perhaps their biggest Pacific League victory of the season Wednesday night, as Kristina Sahakian turned in a huge night with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Kailyn Gideon also had a big night with 11 point and 10 rebounds. Mariel Telebrico added nine points, three steals and two assists, Ivet Satorian had six points, seven rebounds and two assists and Karah Hui totaled six points, five rebounds and two steals. Glendale improved to 11-14 overall and 5-6 in league.

Muir 45, Hoover 43: The Tornadoes missed on a last-second game-tying attempt at home on Wednesday afternoon in Pacific League play.

With the defeat, Hoover dropped to 3-14-1 overall and 3-8-1 in league.

Nanor Sevajian tallied 12 points and five points, while Nairi Sevajian totaled nine points and 12 rebounds and Luna Panosian added 10 points and three rebounds.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Glendale 7, Arcadia 4: The Nitros improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in league after the Pacific League regular-season finale victory on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our goal for this season was to be top two in league,” Nitros Coach Forest Holbrook said. “We’re really excited about this, but we still have the league tournament.”

Naira Sarkian paced Glendale with two goals, while the duo of Melani Aghazarian and Vehik Golabi played solid defense against the Apaches counterattack.
