Sports roundup: Flintridge Prep water polo puts in solid Segerstrom showing

Flintridge Prep in Segerstrom Tournament: The Rebels, ranked ninth in CIF Southern Section Division IV, were dealt their first loss of the season to open the tournament, but rebounded for a good overall showing, finishing fifth with an 8-5 win over La Habra on Saturday afternoon capping their run.

On Friday, the Rebels (8-1) lost to host Segerstrom, 9-4. Segerstrom is currently ranked third in Division VI and is the division’s reigning champion.

Prep rebounded resoundingly with a 14-3 win over Burroughs later Friday.

In Saturday’s morning action, the Rebels got another lopsided win, besting Laguna Hills, 10-2.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Holy Family in Burbank Tournament: Despite a 2-3 run through Saturday’s afternoon action, the Gaels took home one of three championships by winning the bronze division.

Holy Family (2-4) knocked off Mark Keppel in the bronze championship game, 25-14, thanks to four kills from Jordan Bautista and three kills from Skylynn Marquez.

The Gaels reached the bronze finale after knocking off nearby Bellarmine-Jefferson, 25-21, in the semifinals in a game of surges.

Holy Family led, 20-10, and later 24-14 before the Guards made one last surge in scoring seven straight points to pull within 24-21.

The momentum was finally stopped on a double-hit call against Bell-Jeff.

Marquez led the Gaels in victory with three kills and four aces, while Bautista added three kills and one ace.

The two victories represented a turnabout for the Gaels, who went 0-3 in earlier pool play action in dropping matches to Brentwood (25-7, 25-4), Heritage Christian (25-16, 25-15) and West Ranch (25-7, 25-4).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Glendale Community College in Cerritos Tournament: The Lady Vaqueros notched their first win of the season Friday in the Cerritos Tournament, but lost three in a row thereafter to fall to 1-5 on the season.

GCC collected a 25-13, 25-22, 25-15 victory Friday against Cuyamaca before losing to El Camino, 25-9, 25-11, 25-1.

On Saturday, GCC opened with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 loss to Cypress before a 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21 setback against Cerritos. Against Cerritos, Marisa Baltzar had seven kills and 15 digs, Dominique Hall added 10 kills, Nancy Nunez-Brooks tallied seven kills, Briana Martinez had 25 digs and Nicole Encarnacion had four kills, 18 assists and five digs.
