Sports Roundup: St. Francis soccer ends tough season on winning note

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 2, Chaminade 1: Frankie Veiga and Jake Anderson each scored a goal for the visiting Golden Knights on Wednesday in a Mission League match.

St. Francis finished 6-10-4 overall and 3-7-2 in league and will not qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1997.

“Its been a frustrating year and we were in so many close games,” St. Francis Coach Glen Appels said. “We were just on the wrong side in most of the tight games. We will be senior-heavy next year and will have a lot of returners. We will try to put it all together.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: The host Tologs surrendered the final two goals in Wednesday afternoon’s Mission League match in falling in the season finale at Friedman Field.

Sophia Saldivar connected on a 10-yard strike for the Tologs (9-9-2, 2-7-1), who gave up goals in the 55th and 59th minute in a contest in which Flintridge Sacred Heart outshot Chaminade, 15-14.

Tologs goalie Dani Garcia finished with nine saves.

Burbank 5, Glendale 0: The host Nitros suffered a Pacific League defeat Tuesday. Glendale dropped to 4-11-3, 2-9-2 in league.

San Gabriel Mission 10, Holy Family 1: The visiting Gaels fell to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in league after a Horizon League defeat on Tuesday afternoon.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 48, Glendale 39: Glendale dropped to 11-15, 5-7 in the Pacific League with Tuesday’s defeat.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 47, Glendale 27: The Nitros offense could never get going in Tuesday’s Pacific League loss, as Glendale fell to 8-17, 3-10 in league.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 5, Riverside College 4: The visiting Vaqueros improved to 3-0 on Tuesday with a nonconference victory. Glendale got singles wins from Viktoriya Shumakova (6-1, 6-1), Amy Shigenaga (4-6, 6-3, 6-3), Ashley Sumudio (6-0, 7-5) and Ayaka Takeuchi (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, the tandem of Shigenaga and Takeuchi picked up an 8-3 win.

On Monday, the Vaqueros earned a 5-4 nonconference home victory against Mount San Antonio College. The Vaqueros got singles wins from Shumakova (6-3, 7-5), Sumudio (6-0, 7-5) and Takeuchi (6--2, 6-1) and doubles victories from Alexandra Amor and Shumakova (8-4) and Shigenaga and Takeuchi (8-3).

The Vaqueros opened their season Sunday with a 7-2 nonconference road victory against College of the Sequoias. Glendale received doubles victories from Amor and Shumakova (8-0), Meghedi Mooradian and Sumudio (8-4) and Shigenaga and Takeuchi (8-6). Picking up singles wins for the Vaqueros were Shumakova (6-3, 6-3), Amor (6-0, 6-0), Shigenaga (6-3, 6-2) and Takeuchi (6-2, 6-3).

MEN’S GOLF

Glendale Community College in Western State Conference match: The Vaqueros finished sixth in the eight-team event Monday with a 432 at Valencia Country Club. Evin Davis carded an 11-over-par 83 for Glendale.
