Sports Notebook: Streaking Sevak Magakian to fight on card Friday

The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.

MMA FIGHTER MAGAKIAN READY TO KEEP ROLLING

Rolling through competition throughout the Southern California regional circuit, Glendale mixed-martial-artist Sevak Magakian will continue on his quest to get to the Ultimate Fighting Championship when he fights on Friday in Commerce.

Magakian (12-3), who is riding a five-fight winning streak, will take on the 6-3 Nick Piedmont at BAMMA USA’s event at the Commerce Casino.

Set to be the ninth bout of the 11-bout card, Magakian will make his 145-pound featherweight debut after regularly fighting at 155 pounds and even higher during his six-plus year career, which has thus far been highlighted by his selection as a part of “The Ultimate Fighter” on Spike TV in 2010.

Magakian will fight for the fourth time in 2012 and of his 12 career victories; nine have come via submission, all in the first round.

Piedmont is a two-time Bellator Fighting Championships veteran and is coming off a first-round knockout win in June that broke a previous two-fight losing streak.

LATE STEELERS FIELD GOAL BEATS REID, EAGLES

It looked like the Philadelphia Eagles were going to pull out another tight game late in Sunday’s contest against host Pittsburgh Steelers. However, instead of another one-point win, the Eagles and Coach Andy Reid, a former player at Glendale Community College, suffered a two-point loss, 16-14.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger converted a pair of critical third downs during an efficient 64-yard drive over the final 6:33 and Shaun Suisham drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Steelers to the victory over the Eagles in the rain.

Philadelphia (3-2) appeared on the verge of its third one-point win of the season when quarterback Michael Vick hit Brent Celek for a two-yard score midway through the fourth quarter.

“We put ourselves in a position to win the game,” Reid told the Associated Press. “We need to make sure we get off the field on that last drive.”

Vick fumbled the ball three times in the first half, and he lost two of them, which would prove costly for the Eagles. The most crucial turnover came when the Eagles had the ball on Pittsburgh’s 3-yard line and Vick lost it and the Steelers (2-2) recovered in the end zone. That cost the Eagles a potential seven points or an almost certain three points in a game they lost by two.

“It’s the game of football,” Vick told the AP. “Things happen. I wish I could take the fumble back on the goal line but you can’t. Ultimately I think we put ourselves into a position to win this game and we didn’t win.”

The Eagles return to action Sunday by hosting the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. EDT.

AREA TEAMS EARN CIF RANKINGS

A host of local teams are ranked among the top 10 in their respective CIF Southern Section divisions in polls released Monday.

Boys’ water polo leads the way, as Glendale remains No. 1, Flintridge Prep is No. 5 and Crescenta Valley is No. 8 in Division V.

In football, St. Francis stayed at eighth in the Western Division.

In boys’ cross-country, Flintridge Prep is second in Division V and Crescenta Valley is 10th in Division I. In girls’ cross-country, Flintridge Prep is second in Division V.

GLENDALE QB CLUB TO HOLD MEETING

The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club will conduct its fifth meeting at 11:30 a.m. today at The Elk’s Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St., Glendale.

The club, which is in its 70th year, is geared to support the Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover and St. Francis high football teams and the Glendale Community College football program.

The guest speaker will be Eric Sondheimer, a sports writer with the Los Angeles Times.

Lunch is $17 at the door for members and $20 for guests. A yearly club membership is $50.

WRESTLING EVENT BACK IN GLENDALE

“Championship Wrestling from Hollywood” slams back into Glendale on Sunday, when the organization formerly known as “NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood” holds its next television taping.

Set for 3 p.m., as usual, the monthly tapings take place at Glendale Studios (1239 S. Glendale Ave).

Featured talent is likely to include worlds heavyweight champion “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce, Heritage Tag Team Champions The Tribe, International Television Champion Willie Mack, Joey Ryan, Scorpio Sky, Shaun Ricker and others.
