Vaqueros golf makes it three straight

With the layout of the San Dimas Canyon Golf Course a concern for Glendale Community College women’s golf Coach Greg Osbourne, he wasn’t sure how the Vaqueros would fare when they participated in the third Western State Conference match Wednesday.

Thanks to another quality effort from Pattraporn Silawanna, Osbourne was able to breathe easier.

Silawanna, the conference’s reigning individual champion, fired a two-over-par 74 to lead Glendale to its third straight conference victory.

“I was concerned about the way we would play on this course,” said Osbourne, who guided the Vaqueros to their first conference championship and a runner-up spot in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Women’s Golf Championship last season. “If we were going to get beat in a conference match, I figured this might be the one.

“If you hit the ball a little off, it will go down a cart path along the out of bounds line. It’s a side hill with a lot of tricky holes. The course just wasn’t forgiving. We were able to get through it.”

Glendale finished with a 324, edging College of the Canyons by 12 strokes. Bakersfield placed third (366), followed by Santa Barbara (374) and Citrus (404).

Vicanda Ma of Glendale had a 79. The Vaqueros also got an 83 and 88 from Thanawan Sriratchaya and Fanny Ostlund, respectively. Kristin Grimes of Canyons had a 72 to earn medalist honors.

Earlier, the Vaqueros picked up conference victories in Ventura and Santa Barbara. However, Wednesday’s win left Osbourne impressed.

“It’s a credit to none of them ever quitting and this is just another big stepping stone,” said Osbourne, whose team won the Southern California Regionals last season. “I like the way we’ve gotten better.

“It’s a reflection of wanting to keep on improving. They are good enough to win. It’s just about preparation. You look at somebody like Pattraporn, you can see her improving with every round.”

Glendale will next compete in another conference match at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield.

“That’s going to be another tough course,” Osbourne said. “We’ve never played it before, but neither have a lot of the other teams.”
