Ocean View School District faces teacher cuts

Share

The Ocean View School District may eliminate as many as 38 teachers for the coming school year as it continues to struggle with budget cuts and class-size increases.

The district recently issued 64 layoff notices to temporary teachers, and only 26 of them may return this fall, Supt. William Loose said. The announcement came days after a heated school board meeting at which dozens of teachers, students and parents decried Ocean View’s recent decision to boost class sizes from 24 to 29 students in the lower grades.

The district has 43 posted teaching vacancies for the coming school year, but 17 of them are expected to be filled by permanent teachers who will shift assignments due to the class-size reorganization. Loose said the number of temporary teachers hired back could increase if permanent teachers retire or enrollment increases over the summer.

No permanent teachers were given layoff notices.

A special board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the district headquarters at 17200 Pinehurst Lane, Huntington Beach. The only agenda item is a closed-session evaluation of Loose’s job performance, but a public comment session is scheduled before it.
