Golden West College announced Tuesday the hiring of Mark Schubert as head coach of the Rustlers' men's and women's swimming and diving programs.

He has worked with such swimmers as Shirley Babashoff, Sippy Woodhead, Jill Sterkel, Janet Evans, Lenny Krayzelburg, Lindsay Benko, Erik Vendt, Larsen Jensen, Ous Mellouli, Dara Torres and Kaitlin Sandeno. Schubert will head a Golden West aquatics program that has captured 15 state and 49 conference championships in its history.
Local lifeguards to compete in Seal Beach
Lifeguards from Huntington Beach are among the competitors from across the state who will compete Saturday and Sunday at the 2011 California Surf Lifesaving Assn. Championships and California Junior Lifeguard Championships in Seal Beach.
About 3,000 professional (ages 16-75) and junior ocean guards (ages 9-16) are expected to compete in surf swim races, beach runs, paddleboard, surf boat races and Ironman and Ironwoman events. Competition starts at 8 a.m. both days on the north side of the Seal Beach Pier (888 Ocean Ave.) and is free to the public.
Youth hoops camp starts Monday at Edison
The 12th annual Edison Basketball Youth Camp, which is co-sponsored by PCH Hoops, starts Monday and runs through July 29 at the Edison High gymnasium. The camp runs for 1 to 1 p.m. daily and is open to youth grades third through eighth at a cost of $120 per camper. Each camper also receives a complimentary basketball.
