A Huntington Beach man was convicted Wednesday of the shooting death of another man at a city park, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Derek Christopher Adams, 23, of Huntington Beach shot and killed Gregory Heintz of Garden Grove at Murdy Park in Huntington Beach on Oct. 22, 2010.

Heintz was there with friends to get a phone that Adams had stolen, prosecutors said.

His co-defendant, Marissa Star Bilotti, 21, of Huntington Beach, is awaiting trial in September for murder, robbery and aggravated assault charges, prosecutors said.

Earlier on the day of the shooting, Adams forcefully entered the home of parolee Cody Mosher in Newport Beach and confronted him and his girlfriend, whom Adams was romantically interested in, according to prosecutors.

FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version incorrectly had Cody’s last name as Masher. It is actually Mosher.

Adams argued with Mosher and his girlfriend, then stole money and Mosher’s phone, according to prosecutors.

Adams also punched and stabbed Mosher with a knife before leaving, but the injury was not life-threatening.

Adams used the stolen phone to send text messages to Mosher’s girlfriend before setting up a meeting at Murdy Park to return it.

Mosher’s girlfriend drove to the park along with Heintz and other friends. Adams was waiting for them there, and when Heintz walked up to him to get the phone, he shot him in the stomach, prosecutors said.

He faces a maximum of 48 years to life in state prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled Oct. 19, prosecutors said.
