The Sunset League race winds down this week with key match-ups that will determine playoff seedings for the top teams.
Edison kept its postseason hopes alive by defeating Marina, 16-3, on Oct. 24. The Chargers (13-14) went up, 5-0, after one quarter and increased their lead to 11-1 at the half.
Eleven different Chargers scored led by Alec Niederland with four goals. Freshmen Jake Moss, Tyler Romswinkel and Luke Haydorf, also scored.
Edison stepped out of league play on Oct. 25 to take on Estancia, and the Chargers scored a 13-3 win against the Eagles. Juniors Joe Menke and Ryan Ludwig each scored three goals. Niederland and Troy Oates, normally field players, shared time in the goal and each registered two saves.
Huntington Beach was dropped from a share of the league lead Oct. 24 when Newport Harbor defeated the Oilers, 11-8. The win gave the Sailors sole possession of first place with one game to play.
In another Sunset game Oct. 24, Fountain Valley fell, 18-6, to Los Alamitos. The Griffins are tied for second place with Huntington, both with 3-1 records.
Sunset League play came to an end Wednesday . Scores from the Edison-Fountain Valley and Huntington-Los Alamitos matches, weren't available at press time.
The CIF Southern Section boys' water polo playoff pairings will be announced Sunday .
In Sunset League action Oct. 25, Huntington Beach was upended by second-ranked Los Alamitos (Division 1-AA), 25-9, 25-21, 25-12. The loss snapped a five-game win streak in league play for the Oilers who slipped to 6-3 in league. In another match, Marina fell, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21, 25-5, to Newport Harbor.
The Sunset League season ended Tuesday . The Sunset League schedule concluded Wednesday but scores from the Marina-Fountain Valley and Edison-Huntington matches, weren't available at press time.
The CIF-SS girls' volleyball pairings will be released Saturday .
Huntington started postseason play Monday and the Oilers posted a 7-0 shutout of visiting Chaminade of West Hills in a Tournament of Champions game at Miller Field.
Nicola Taglieri sent Huntington on its way by scoring off an assist from Abby Masters. Kayla Wigney, who earned a scholarship to UC Davis, scored the next two goals with Masters picking up her second assist. Wigney also set up a score by Masters that put the Oilers up, 4-0, then scored consecutive goals to put the score at 6-0. Kirsti Stangeland scored the final goal.
Huntington had captured the Sunset League title Oct. 25 by defeating Marina, 4-0. Wigney scored twice and Taglieri scored once. Allie Knobbe had two assists and Masters and Amanda Mattes each had an assist.
The Tournament of Champions semifinal match-ups between Huntington and Glendora, and Edison and Harvard Westlake, were scheduled for Wednesday , The scores weren't available at press time.
Playoff action concludes Thursday at Westminster High. The tournament's third-place game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7 p.m.
The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets were released Monday . Edison was the lone local team to qualify for postseason play. The Chargers, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League, took on Thousand Oaks (Marmonte League No. 1) in a Division 1 first-round game Wednesday . The score wasn't available at press time.
The girls' tennis playoffs continue at 2 p.m. Friday with second round games. An Edison win Wednesday would advance the Chargers to face the winner of another Wednesday first-round game between Palm Springs (Desert Valley No. 2) and Mira Costa (Bay League No. 2).
The Division 1 quarterfinals are at 2 p.m. next Monday , and semifinal matches are at 2 p.m. Wednesday . The division final is at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at Claremont Club in Claremont.
