High School Roundup: Edison falls short to Laguna

Share

A strong start to both halves of Tuesday’s nonleague girls’ water polo game between host Edison and Laguna Beach wasn’t quite enough to propel the Chargers to victory in a early-season matchup between teams ranked in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

Sixth-ranked Laguna scored the game’s final two goals, and pulled out a 10-8 victory over ninth-ranked Edison at the Ocean View High Aquatics Center.

The Chargers took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter but were outscored, 3-0, in the second quarter and trailed, 5-3, at the half. They caught the Breakers at 5-5 behind consecutive goals by Lyndsie Williams and Sabrina Jensen at the outset of the second half, and the score was still tied, 6-6, heading into the fourth quarter.

Jensen, a sophomore, scored the last of her three goals by powering in a long shot with 1:27 to play. It tied the score (8-8) one final time. A goal by Laguna’s Brighid Burnes, with her team in a six-on-five advantage, gave the Breakers the lead for good with 48.6 seconds remaining.

Risa Burke scored twice for Edison which fell to 3-5 overall.

“Our girls came out and competed big-time in the second half,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “I told them to forget trying to drop on defense, and we went into a press. The girls did a great job with that. We held them to two goals until they got those two late scores.

“We’re a really young team and the girls are working hard. Sabrina [Jensen] has never played polo before. The girls are gaining great experience.”

Edison has a tough three-game swing up north this weekend against three Santa Barbara-area teams ranked in Division 1. First up is a Friday date at third-ranked at Santa Barbara. The Chargers will face both No. 9 San Marcos and No. 10 Dos Pueblos on Saturday.
