Man suspected of trying to kill 91-year-old hospital roommate

A patient was charged Friday with the attempted murder of his 91-year-old roommate at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center.

Ibrahim Yousef Battat, 36, of Laguna Niguel faces one felony count of attempted murder, one felony count of elder abuse, and sentencing enhancements for premeditation and deliberation and great bodily injury to an elder, according to a news release from the Orange County district attorney's office.

The release said that about 3:40 p.m. June 4, Battat covered the 91-year-old man's nose and mouth with his hands.

The defendant is also accused of repeatedly punching the man, causing him to suffer a broken finger, major cuts to his head and hand, and a swollen eye, according to the release.

Battat beat the victim until nurses and a patient in the next room arrived to restrain him, the release said. He was subsequently arrested by Fountain Valley police.

If convicted, Battat could face 10 years to life in state prison. He is being held in lieu of $1-million bail. His arraignment is set for June 27 in the West Justice Center, Westminster.
