El Viento graduates are college bound

Eight students from the Oak View neighborhood-based El Viento program graduated Friday at the Golden West College Student Center after receiving years of ocean-based enrichment during the summer and general academic support throughout the year.

El Viento is an organization that takes students in the underprivileged, mostly Latino, Oak View neighborhood — between Warner and Slater avenues and Beach Boulevard and Gothard Street — and helps them get into college.

Now that they've graduated, the program will pay for these students' first two years of college. The nonprofit group raises money through donations.
