Fountain Valley man drowns in Hawaii

A Fountain Valley resident and another Orange County man drowned off Honolulu after snorkeling in strong currents, officials in Hawaii said.

Michael Pui, 32, of Fountain Valley and Steve Tran, 21, of Santa Ana reportedly were in Honolulu on vacation, according to Shayne Enright, a spokeswoman for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

At about 5 p.m. Aug. 23, authorities received a call about three men in distress off the coast. A nearby surfer took a Honolulu man back to shore. Lifeguards pulled Pui and Tran out of the water, Enright said.

CPR was performed on Pui and Tran at the scene, and they were taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Enright said.

Six- to 8-foot waves and strong currents were reported that day. No lifeguard towers are on the beach where the men were snorkeling, Enright said.
