Over Memorial Day weekend, several athletes from around the nation were invited to participate at the USA Water Polo National Team Selection Camps to select team members for the Cadet, Youth, and Junior National Team training rosters.
Vanguard Aquatics of Huntington Beach was well represented at the camps and each of its invited athletes advanced to the next round of training for each National Team.
Vanguard Aquatics had 16 male athletes selected for the camps, the most of any national program.
More than 70 athletes were at each camp and National Team Coaches were responsible for narrowing each team down to 28 athletes for National Team training camps in June. Athletes could then go on to compete in FINA International Water Polo Tournaments in Serbia or Istanbul.
For the Cadet National Team (1999-2001 birth year range), Garrett Zaan, Jacob Cavano, Matt Kacura, Jacob Watson, Quinn Simpson, Warren Loth, Cameron Reagan and Cooper Haddad (youngest selected player, overall, in the nation), from Vanguard made the roster for the June Camp. The assistant coach of the Cadet National Team is current Vanguard and Huntington Beach High School boys' water polo coach, Brian Anderson.
For the Youth National Team (1997-99 birth year range), Vanguard's Elias Lule, Matthew Robert, Patrick Saunders, Jason Dompke and Wyatt Benson were all selected. These athletes could travel to Serbia in August. This team was also coached by former Vanguard Aquatics Coach Djoko Radunovic.
At the Junior National Team NTSC consisting of some 98s', 97s', and some 96s', Quinten Osborne, Ashworth Molthen and Ethan Wojciechowski of Vanguard were selected to the Junior National Team (birth years ranging from 1996-98 birth year range).
Vanguard Aquatics runs programs from 10-under boys' and girls' programs through high school boys' and girls' divisions. For information on the program, visit http://www.hbvanguard.com.
