Youth Scene: HB Lions blank Los Al to win FNL division title

The Huntington Beach fifth-grade Friday Night Lights Football team won the 5th-6th Grade division championship at the Friday Night Lights Football Tournament of Champions.

The Huntington Lions defeated host Los Alamitos, 21-0, in the division final June 8 at McAuliffe Park in Los Alamitos.

Eighteen teams representing cities from Los Angeles to San Diego competed in the tournament. In addition to its title-game win, Huntington defeated Cerritos (33-6), Murrieta (20-7), Temecula (28-12) and host Los Alamitos.

The Lions won their division, which included more than 40 teams, in the Huntington Beach Friday Night Lights season to advanced to the FNLF Tournament of Champions. Eighteen teams (first- and second-place) from 10 Southern California FNLF leagues, vied for the division title.

The Huntington Beach Lions, who turned in a 14-0 season, are: Mikey Welsh, Mathew Blackburn, Nico Brown, Braeden Broyles, Jason Ford, Jack Kosick, Jack McClosky and Brock Sale. The team is coached by Chris Brown and Ian Welsh.

Fountain Valley Girls Fastpitch Softball's 10-and-Under All-Star team, FV Pride, has earned a spot in the 2014 Amateur Softball Assn. B State Championship Tournament. The tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday in Lancaster.

FV Pride qualified for the state tournament after placing second at the district qualifying tournament last weekend . The team took first-place in five previous All-Star tournaments and takes a 28-2-1 record into the state tournament.

The FV Pride, coached by Jr. Beck, Jr. Garcia and Conrad Villafuerte, is: Kale'a Loa Nakashima, Marisa Villafuerte, Gabby Muniz, Piper Park, Emma Mendoza, Samara Ortega, Rebeca Cabeza, Isabella Martinez, Alexis Zaza, Hailey DeMaria, Kiara Palomino and C.J. Garcia.
