Edison Passing Tournament set Saturday

The Edison Passing Tournament, a July staple that has attracted some of the top prep offenses through the years, offers its latest edition Saturday.

Thirty pool-play games will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on several fields on the Edison High campus. The tourney includes three CIF Southern Section champions and two three runner-up schools from the 2013 season, including Pac-5 Division champion St. John Bosco. The Braves also were named the 2013 national champion by MaxPreps.com.

Other teams competing that won Southern Section division titles last fall are Corona Centennial (Inland) and Hart (Northern). Schools finishing runner-up to section titles were Mater Dei (Pac-5), Valencia/Valencia (Northern) and Gardena Serra (Western).

This year's tournament field has expanded to include 20 teams, up from last year's 16-team field.

"This is our best field yet," Edison Coach Dave White said of the 2014 competitors. "There are no slouches. This year we have so many good teams and quarterbacks, and we attempted to select the 20 best teams."

Following pool-play in the morning session, championship round play begins at 1 p.m. White said the tournament championship game will start at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Fountain Valley Lineman Competition

The 25th annual Fountain Valley Lineman Competition was held June 25. Athletes from six schools tested their skills at the event, which included six areas of competition: bench press, power clean, Iron Man relay, truck push, hurdle relay and tug-O-war.

Edison finished in first place in the team standings. Mission Viejo was second followed by JSerra in third, host Fountain Valley was fourth, Kennedy fifth and Pacifica sixth.

"There was some real good competition out there," Fountain Valley Coach Ray Fenton said. "The good thing for us is that last year, we didn't score a point. This year, we scored 23 points."

Fountain Valley competes Thursday in a four-team passing league tourney at Mater Dei. The Barons also will compete Saturday in a passing and lineman tournament at Mission Viejo.
