OVLL captures section crown

The Ocean View Little League All-Stars (12-year-olds) followed up an impressive run to the District 62 title by rolling to the championship of the Section 10 tournament.

Ocean View completed an undefeated tournament run and earned its second postseason title July 15 by routing once-beaten Rancho Mission Viejo (District 68), 12-1, in the Section 10 final at Woodfield Park in Aliso Viejo. The win sent Ocean View to the Southern California Sub Division Championship in El Cajon.

In its three games at the So Cal Sub Division Championship at El Cajon (Fletcher Hills Little League host, District 41), Ocean View beat Canyon Lake (District 28, Section 9) in a tourney opener Saturday, 7-4. lost, 11-8, Sunday to Bonita Sweetwater Valley (District 42, Section 7), and in an elimination game Monday, stayed alive in the tournament by defeating Rancho Cucamonga Vineyard (District 71, Section 8), 15-4.

Ocean View met Sweetwater Valley in another elimination game Tuesday. The score wasn't available at press time. The winner advanced to face undefeated Encinitas Wednesday.

In the Section 10 finale July 15, Ocean View got its offense in gear in the first inning.

Rocco Peppi and Jared Manzo both singled before Jake Vogel hit a three-run home run deep over the fence in center field.

To start off the Ocean View half of the third, Noah Karliner launched a homer that also soared past the fence in center. Edward Pelc followed with a double and went on to score on a double by Mauro Ballinas. Ballinas then scored on a RBI-single by Peppi, which put the advantage at 6-1.

In the fifth, Pelc drew a lead-off walk and later scored following singles by Jag Burden and Riley Shannon. In the sixth, Sinjin Choi hit a lead-off single then with two on, Pelc hit a three-run home run to cap the scoring.

Pelc's spectacular night also included a complete-game performance on the mound. He struck out 15 of the 18 batters he face and allowed only one hit.

Ocean View 6, Rancho Niguel 2

Ocean View jumped ahead early in the July 15 game and never looked back in claiming the Section 10 championship in a tournament final played at Ocean View Little League.

District 62 champ Ocean View scored its first run on a wild pitch in the opening inning and a single by Jimmy Legg, double by Sam Cohn and an RBI double by Danny Kotkosky, led to a second run and a 2-0 lead.

Ocean View tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Cohn scored on a passed ball for the first run and a single by AJ Hurtado that brought home Antonio Ventimiglia.

In addition to his first-inning double, Cohn singled in the second and doubled again in the fourth.

Two runs in the top of the fifth helped Rancho Niguel (District 55) close to within 6-2. An RBI double by Colin Loughrey and a passed ball set off Rancho Niguel's rally. Jack Smith, pitching in relief, came in to close out the game and ended the inning with a strikeout.

Hurtado and Smith combined on a six-hitter and struck out nine.
