Football: Edison gets early start in Hawaii

The calendar may read that we are approaching the midway point of the month, but in just one week the prep football season gets underway on the local scene.

Five teams — Edison, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Marina and Brethren Christian — launch their seasons before the end of the month. Ocean View begins its campaign the first Friday in September.

Edison gets a jump start on the locals by playing its opening game Aug. 23 in Hawaii. The Chargers take on Baldwin High on the island of Maui.

The Chargers opened preseason practice this week.

"We played them three years ago and had a great time," Edison Coach Dave White said. "They treat us very well and they host a big dinner for us after the game. We go there (Hawaii) every three years. It's just been a great experience for the kids."

A week after Edison makes its debut, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Marina and Brethren Christian take the field.

The Oilers host Coronado of Henderson, Nev., Aug. 28.

The Barons will be in Orlando, Fla. to take on South Plantation of Plantation, Fla., the Vikings host Aliso Niguel, and the Warriors visit Riverside Prep, with all three games set for Aug. 29.

Ocean View starts its season Sept. 5 against Marina.

Ray Fenton, who begins his second year as head coach at Fountain Valley, said the program is looking forward to its trip to Florida.

The Barons take on South Plantation at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

Fenton said the Fountain Valley junior varsity team will face a team from Pittsburg on Aug. 30.

"We are excited to open the season in Orlando against a talented South Plantation team," he said. "We wanted to do something outside the box by setting up this game and trip.

"It's going to be an exciting opportunity for our kids to go down there and play against a team from a different region of the country. It should be a great experience."

Fountain Valley held its first practice with pads Thursday.

"It just feels great to get back out there again," Fenton said of the opening practice. "The kids are fired up and we have some work to do before we get our season started."

For the 2014 season, Edison, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Marina, along with fellow Sunset League members Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor, will compete in a new division in the CIF Southern Section, the West Valley Division. The division will include teams from the Sunset, South Coast, Baseline, Foothill and Southwestern leagues.

The CIF-SS announced its proposed playoff divisions (2014 through 2016) in May.

"It's going to be a tough division, one of the toughest in CIF" White said. "There are so many really good programs in this division and you'll have to beat a lot of good teams to win a championship."

Sunset League teams spent the last two years in the CIF-SS Southwest Division, and dominated. Edison won the division championship in the league's first year in the division in 2012, and Huntington won the division crown last year by defeating Newport Harbor in an all-Sunset final.
