Law enforcement officials were on the hunt for two men who robbed the La Cañada Citizens Business Bank shortly before closing time on Thursday in January 2002. The bank manager said employees believed the men to be armed. A third suspect drove the getaway car, a sports utility vehicle that was later found abandoned a short distance away from the bank.

Twenty Years Ago

Dave Spence, today the city’s mayor, in January 1992 announced his intention to run in that spring’s City Council election. Spence was then just completing a four-year term on the Public Safety Commission. Throwing her hat into the ring the same week was Carol Liu, who today serves as state senator representing the area. Both candidates went on to beat the incumbent, Chris Valente, with Spence receiving the most votes.

Rookie catcher Mike Scioscia and outfielder Ron Roenicke represented the L.A. Dodgers at the season kickoff banquet for the La Cañada Junior Baseball Assn. The event was held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.

Forty Years Ago

The founder of Flintridge Prep, Doane M. Lowery, died at the age of 83. The school closed for a day in memory of its first leader, who had retired to Washington.

It was announced that a $1 million Ivers Department Store would be built on property in the 600 block of Foothill Boulevard, at Oakwood Avenue.

Ted Schroeder of La Cañada, a former Wimbledon world singles champion, was honored by the La Cañada Kiwanis Club for his sportsmanship as well as his good citizenship. The local accolades luncheon given Schroeder was the forerunner of the La Cañadan of the Year award the club presents annually.
