At a special ceremony held on the La Cañada High School campus, then-Assemblymember Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) presented a symbolic $40,000 check representing state funds that would help pay for operation of the new joint-use library under construction on the campus.

La Cañada resident Larry Smith, head coach of the USC football team, announced in August 1991 he had signed a multi-year contract extension with the university. However, after a disappointing 1992 season that ended with a loss to Fresno State in the Freedom Bowl, Smith was fired with three years remaining in his contract.

NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft, designed and built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, was nearing Saturn, where it would take an estimated 18,500 photos of the planet, its rings and its satellites.

La Cañada High School opened the 1971-72 school year with three brand new facilities: a three-story fine arts building that included a 660-seat auditorium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and a physical-education/student-center complex that had basketball and volleyball courts on its roof.

Les Tupper, a member of the La Cañada school board, resigned his position due to a lengthy illness. C.E. Brad Millikan was appointed by the board to take Tupper’s seat.

The Rev. Paul Early was conducting regular services in the chapel at St. Francis Seminary in La Cañada while a fundraising campaign continued for money to complete construction of the town’s first Catholic church. Approximately 271 families were served by the new parish, which extended from Alta Canyada on the west to the Arroyo Seco on the east.
