Ten Years Ago

Deitra Reed, the principal at Palm Crest Elementary School, resigned from her job only a few weeks into the new school year to take a post in Duarte Unified School District. It was the fourth resignation from a key La Cañada Unified position within two months’ time.

Twenty Years Ago

A three-day celebration was planned for Oct. 4-6, 1991, when St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada marked its 40th anniversary.

Thirty Years Ago

School board member Warren Gannon voiced objection to athletic scheduling that pitted La Cañada High School’s football team against Pasadena High School in a “slaughter” that left three Spartans injured and the team defeated, 27-0. “I strenuously object to La Cañada even playing Pasadena when they are so much larger and, obviously, so much out of our league,” Gannon said.

Forty Years Ago

The completion of the auditorium in the new fine arts building at La Cañada High was deemed official with the installation of 660 seats — after a two-month delay. The first large group presentation, a modern dance performance, was held in the facility on Sept. 30, 1971.

Fifty Years Ago

A building at 804 Foothill Blvd. formerly occupied by Eve’s hat shop was approved for temporary use as a chapel for St. George’s Episcopal Church while its members awaited the construction of their permanent chapel on the same block.

Sixty Years Ago

Lyn Roberts sold the most tickets to the Community Fair held in early fall 1951 and was rewarded by being named the event’s queen. Roberts, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, received her crown from internationally known tennis star and La Cañada resident Ted Schroeder. The fair raised about $4,000 to help with the completion of the Youth House (today the Community Center) on Chevy Chase Drive.
