The Valley Line: Pageant of the Masters; LCF ‘floaters’ conduct their Happy Hour

Share

I made my annual trek to Laguna Beach for the Pageant of the Masters. This year, daughter Heather flew down from her home in Palo Alto to join me. We had a fun day as we shopped and lunched first at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, then went on to the fantastic Roger’s Gardens, a floral and gift shop fantasy that is hardly equaled. After those wanderings, off we went to dine at the Pageant’s restaurant, Tivoli and then the Pageant itself.

This year’s pageant of “Tableaux Vivants or Living Pictures” is themed “The Art Detective.” I am never disappointed and this year’s production with lots of exciting staging was so exciting and intriguing.

It is every bit as intriguing as the Pageant spin masters advertised: “The evening will reveal how lost treasures were discovered, where crimes of passion were uncovered (or covered up) and how creative riddles were unraveled, with a gallery of the world’s great masterpieces providing the clues!”

The stories and revelations that were unfolded that night were anything but elementary, Watson. The Pageant runs through Aug. 30 and tickets are still available.

The day had been a steamy one, but by the time guests arrived at the home of Nana and Joel Smith for the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. Happy Hour, it was beginning to cool.

The fabulous shade trees in the Smith backyard were gathering places for folks to sip a “cool one” and talk about the ways of the world. Naturally, one of the main topics was the building of the float and how things are coming along.

The extended food tables are always a popular place to gather and as usual the hors d’oeuvres people brought not only had eye appeal but also were pleasing to the palate. Just like bees to honey, the dessert table was buzzing with people with a sweet tooth.

These Happy Hours are always a lot of fun and also raise money for the building of our float. The next mixer is set for Friday, Aug. 22 at the home of Mayfield and Sarah Marshall. This is the traditional Hamburger Night and it is always a popular gathering — join the fun and taste juicy hamburgers from the grill.

Also, join other “floaters” on Aug. 12 at Mijares Restaurant in Pasadena for a dining-out event that also raises money for the float.

Among the people attending the Happy Hour were Bill Pounders, president of the organization, Sherrill Carbonetti, Joe and Lynne Thompson, Pat and Otis Hutchins, David Granish, Barbie Eland, Caroline Craven, Eileen St. Amand, Rose, Linda and Richard Gonzales; Fran and Bill Evans, Dick and Evie Barley, Jim Boreham, Carrie Grochow, Claire Slaughter, Anthony Portantino, Jenny Pass, Bob and Joyce Covey, Bob Wallace, Daryal and Mary Gant, Patti Newton, Darleen and Joel Peterson, Lee Johnson, Donna and Jon Barstad, Becky and Chuck Gelhaar, Mayor Mike Davitt and his wife Allison, Rose and Don Manning, Gloria Winkley, Peggy Hotaling, Joey Mitchell, Mike Leininger, Tony Riewe, Dick and Jill Williams, Sue Beatty, Ken Smith, Barbara Dennerline, Jim Geoghegan, Anne Hills, Charlotte Layland, Pam Wiedenbeck, Penelope and Al Anton, Nancy and Julie Thurston, Cathy and Pete Palermo, Malek Peterman, Kay Payer, Alicia and Larry McVicker, John Burrows, and Diane and John Landrum.
