The Valley Line: Burgers buoy float group’s Happy Hour

Share

There was a great turnout for the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn.’s August Happy Hour.

Mayfield and Sarah Marshall of Vineta Avenue hosted the event, which is such a popular one because it is the annual “Hamburger Night.”

The grills were set up in the Marshalls’ expansive backyard and burgers were done to perfection. Of course each year the dinner includes a wide array of “good stuff” to add to a burger, as well as sides to accompany it on the plate.

Adding to the food fest is the usual array of varied appetizers and cookies that are brought by the guests. One of the highlights are Bobbie Hemphill’s deviled eggs — they are always gone in a flash.

Art Johnson and Dick Grippi were putting their mixology skills to work, doing a great job as the evening’s bartenders.

There was plenty to talk about as our 2017 float ,”Backyard Rocketeer,” is moving right along in its construction and the community always eagerly awaits an update.

Among the many guests at the Happy Hour were Karen Schroeder and her husband, Gary. Karen is Mayfield Marshall’s daughter. She and her husband are avid car collectors and recently took the top prize in their class at Pebble Beach Concors d’Elegance with their two-man Indianapolis race car, a 1935 Rigling & Stevens Pirrung Special. Quite a feather in their helmet, I would say!

Another special guest there that night was Carla Nickel, Lee Johnson’s niece who was visiting from her Chicago area home.

Just some of the other folks I spotted attending the Happy Hour were Ted Davis, Anne Murphy, Steve and Jennifer Hronek, Anne Hills, Scott and Linda Deacon, Tim and Carrie Grochow, Chuck Hughes, Ernest and Denise Koeppen, Jenny Pass, Bob Wallace, Chuck and Becky Gelhaar, Joey Mitchell, Eileen St. Amand, Bob and Liz Craven, Caroline Craven, Ross Selvidge, Sue Beatty, Darryl and Jerri Thomson, Alison and Michael Davitt, Greg and Susan Turner, and Ann and Bob Neilson.
