Former Spartan Anton Arboleda left behind at Soldier Hollow

La Cañada High graduate Anton Arboleda fell Thursday in the round of 16 in the United States Public Links Championship at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.

The 18th-seeded Arboleda, a former All-Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year who now attends UCLA, lost to second-seeded T.J. Vogel, 3 and 2, in match play action. Earlier Thursday, Arboleda defeated Alex Williams, 6 and 5, in a round of 32 match.

Arboleda began match play Wednesday, defeating Thomas O’Bryan, 6 and 4, on Wednesday.

Arboleda started the tournament Monday with a one-under-par 70 in the first round of stroke play. On Tuesday, he fired a 71 to finish in a four-way tie for 17th at 141 to advance. The event is conducted by the United States Golf Assn.

Del Fierro in Callway Junior event

La Cañada Flintridge resident Jason Del Fierro, 12, finished in a three-way tie for 27th on Thursday at the Callway Junior World Golf Championships at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon. Del Fierro registered a three-round score of 225 in the boys’ 11-12 Division.

Del Fierro finished the tournament Thursday with a four-over-par 72. He shot an opening-round score of 73 on Tuesday and then had a 76 on Wednesday.
