George Hasslein, 83; Dean of Cal Poly SLO School of Architecture
George Hasslein, 83, founding dean of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s School of Architecture and Environmental Design, died of a heart attack Aug. 24 in San Luis Obispo.
A native of Los Angeles, Hasslein earned his architect’s degree from USC and joined the Cal Poly faculty in 1950. A year later he was named head of its then-new architectural engineering department.
A staunch advocate of a multidisciplinary curriculum, Hasslein headed the School of Architecture and Environmental Design from its creation in 1968 until 1983, when he returned to teaching. The school he built includes instruction in architecture, architectural engineering, city and regional planning, construction management and landscape architecture.
Hasslein, who planned to teach a full schedule this fall as usual, was a consultant on architecture to the Cal State Board of Trustees. Among his awards was one for excellence in education from the California Council of the American Institute of Architects.
