The North Dakota State University Extension Service, along with other members of the I-29 Dairy Outreach Consortium, is hosting a four-session workshop to help North Dakota agricultural producers hire, motivate and retain employees.
The Ag Employee Management workshop will be held March 20-21 and April 3-4 at the Quality Inn and Suites in Jamestown. The sessions will start at 1 p.m. March 20 and April 3 and conclude at noon the following day.
The first two sessions will deal with hiring, including building a reputation as a great employer, creating an inventory of labor needs, developing job descriptions, recruiting, evaluating applicants, conducting effective interviews and checking references.
Session two also will cover the supervisor's role of motivating and training employees. In addition, participants will receive help in understanding the Hispanic culture and its influence on working relations with employees.
Session three also will deal with motivation and will include information on engaging employees, enhancing a multigenerational workforce, defining workplace expectations, providing appropriate training and communicating effective feedback.
The final session will cover retaining employees, including fair and competitive compensation packages, encouraging career management planning and what documentation employers need.
Participants will receive an on-farm follow-up consultation five to six months after completing the workshop.
J.W. Schroeder, NDSU Extension dairy specialist, is one of the workshop presenters. Other presenters include Extension specialists from the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State University and industry representatives.
The registration fee is $125 per person. If more than one person from the same operation is attending the workshop, the cost is $125 for the first person and $80 each for two additional people. The fee includes meals and materials.
