Coach: Jim Kretchman.
Of interest: Before the season started, the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference declared Northern State ineligible for the conference title this season because the Wolves have scheduled 11 GAMES, one more than the league rules allow.
Northern knew the ruling was coming down as there are big changes afoot as Northern announced plans during the summer that it would be leaving the SDIC after the 1973-74 school year. Plus, the Wolves had made a commitment to Mankato that it would make a return trip there in 1973 after the Mavericks played in Aberdeen in 1971.
Earlier, Northern approached the SDIC officials about getting out of the conference in only football to allow the Wolves to put together a more challenging schedule. The Wolves have won the last eight conference titles in a row and 12 of the last 13 in football. Northern is 72-4-1 in conference GAMES over the last 13 years.
The SDIC rejected that idea.
Northern, a charter member of the SDIC when it was formed on Sept. 24, 1917, is in discussions to form a conference with the three Nebraska colleges: Kearney, Wayne and Chadron along with Eastern Montana State and Black Hills State. That conference, however, did not materialize.
Northern went 6-0 against conference opponents, outscoring them 249-83.
On Nov. 2, the Wolves went to Springfield and defeated the USD/Springfield Pointers 61-12. On Nov. 3, the Wolves went to Mankato and got beat 35-6.
