VERSAILLES — William H. “Bill” Reed, 68, retired band director and husband of Bennie Kay Smith Reed, died Saturday, March 19.
Born Dec. 1, 1942, in Mercer County, he was a son of the late Hugh Ellsworth and Lois Lancaster Rue Reed. Mr. Reed was a devout Catholic, father and husband, was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus, where he earned a 3rd degree.
He was an avid boater and fisherman, a 1960 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, a 1965 graduate of Eastern Kentucky State College a member of KEA and KEMA for 30 years, having served as 5th district chairman of KMEA for eight years. He was a charter member of the Kentucky Marching Band Board of Control for six years, a Kentucky Colonel for outstanding leadership as a teacher, and an Apple Award recipient as a teacher showing outstanding accomplishments with a group.
Mr. Reed served in Boyle, Oldham and Henry counties as an elementary, middle, and high school band director for 25 years. He was choir director at Perryville Baptist Church for two years and Pewee Valley Aloysius Catholic Church for four years.
He placed 14th nationally as state representative to the National Society of Arts & Letters Voice Scholarship awards competition in Chicago, Ill., was a cast member in the Stephen Foster Story and a member of Stephen Foster Story quartet, “The Roustabouts.”
He also was a soloist and member of the Louisville Singers, a member of Lexington Singers, a member and soloist with the Madison, Ind., community chorus, and placed third in the Cardinal District Barbershop Quartet contest singing with the “Strike Four” quartet.
He was section leader, soloist, assistant director and board member of the Kentuckian’s Chorus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Becky Reed Schmidt and Terri Jo Thomas; a brother, Ronald H. (Martha Shellenberger) Reed; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Mack (Carol) Smith and Terry (Debbie) Smith; three grandchildren, Mikalah, Alex and Chris Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, at St. Leo Catholic Church with Father Danny Schwenderman and Father Dan Noll officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg.
Active casketbearers will be Joseph Mack and Terry Smith, Tom Thomas, Jay Schmidt, Lewis Kelly and Lee Sable. Honorary casket bearers are Ron Reed, Thomas Reed, the Rev. Doug Simpson, Hurst music store staff, members of the Kentuckian’s Chorus and Brothers of Knights of Columbus.
