5. Survivor found 17 days after Bangladesh garment factory collapse

Workers clearing rubble from the scene of the multistory garment factory that collapsed in Bangladesh killing more than 1,000 workers at last count and injuring around 2,000 more found a woman alive and rescued her Friday, 17 days after the tragedy. The Associated Press reported she was found on the second floor; the New York Times said she was found in a Muslim prayer room in the basement of the building, which afforded her oxygen and enough space to stand up. In any event, she was uninjured, an official on the scene said, but taken to a hospital to be examined. [AP via Los Angeles Times] [NYT]

  19. Prada, Baz Luhrmann fete 'Great Gatsby' costumes on starry night

Director/producer/writer Baz Luhrmann must be pretty proud of his latest offering, "The Great Gatsby," due out May 10. At least it looked that way Tuesday night in New York at Prada's cocktail reception kicking off the SoHo store's exhibit of the movie's costumes, designed by Luhrmann's wife, Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, in collaboration with fashion designer Miuccia Prada. One might say he embodied the phrase "busting his buttons" (as seen here). Some of the movie's stars -- Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher -- attended, as did Katy Perry, Florence Welch and Maggie Gyllenhaal. [WWD]

  23. The Met Ball draws serious and sublime fashion

All eyes in the fashion world were on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala -- aka the Met Ball -- in NYC on Monday. This is the annual event at which celebrities and fashionistas kick it up a notch and wear their most dramatic looks. Actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Jessica Parker shared a laugh on the red carpet (perhaps about Parker's Gatsby-esque headpiece?), while co-chairs Riccardo Tisci and Rooney Mara seemed to be dead serious. Mara's frilly white gown betrayed the theme of this year's fashion exhibition, "Punk: Chaos to Couture," in the silver zippers at the waist. Nina Dobrev wore a more elaborate take on the theme in her corseted sweeping black dress. Kim Kardashian wore a floral Risci gown with matching gloves, which led to a disturbing sense that she was missing her hands as they blended in with the dress. To see what I mean, and for more photos from the event, see our photo gallery.
