3. Travelers' Founder: Hartford's 19th-Century Renaissance Man

The Hartford Courant
In 1845, a young man from the marble district of the Litchfield Hills arrived in Hartford just as the city's new rail line helped trigger an industrial boom that, by 1870, made it one of the richest small cities in America. At age 22, James G....

7. James Nares' new film looks at everyday moments

Set to an original score by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, artist James Nares' unscripted, hour-long high def video is a meditation on people-watching, shot over one week in September 2011 on the streets of New York City, from Battery Park to the end of Upper Broadway. Nares wanted his film to be about the everyday, magical moments we all experience but often overlook. It'll run at the Wadsworth until the end of October.

13. A Summer of Shakespeare in Hartford

Both The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream share a common bond in that they are Shakespearian comedies that could have easily been tragedies of Romeo and Juliet proportions without the interference of some meddling supernatural characters. Both are, arguably, also ideally suited to summertime, when warm weather and sunshine tempt us to sleep outdoors and allow the faeries to interfere in our love lives, or perhaps to journey to exotic lands that may house magicians. And Hartford is graced by stellar and unique productions of both plays this year.

21. 'Collective Memories' exhibition at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford

The first of two new exhibitions presented by the Amistad Center at the Wadsworth, Collective Memories explores societal concepts of race and culture — how they are created, distributed, and maintained historically — to help folks understand what it means to be African American. Organized thematically around three topics, people, places and things, the exhibit draws from the Amistad Center's permanent collection of art (including Ellis Walter Ruley's "Grapefruit Picking Time," c. 1930s, pictured), artifacts, manuscripts, documents, and other items from the 17th to the early 20th centuries.
