1. The 15th Annual City-Wide Open Studios Takes Place Throughout New Haven, Oct. 5-21

Set your sights in and around New Haven when planning out your next three weekends, as the 15th annual City-Wide Open Studios is here! It's a celebration of the art, artists and art spots that New Haven has to offer all year round. Opening night Oct. 5 features a shindig, The Crystal Ball, and other receptions and welcoming events scattered throughout New Haven's 9th Square. This weekend, Oct. 5-6, artists in New Haven, Hamden and West Haven will open their studio doors to showcase all the art tucked away right under our noses. The weekend of Oct. 13-14 hones in on Erector Square (315 Peck St., New Haven), and Oct. 20-21 sees the old New Haven Register building down by Long Wharf, the Alternative Space, host even more stuff to see. Artspace spearheads the whole thing, so head on over to their website, artspacenh.org, for the calendar and full info about all the goings-on.

  3. New Haven Fall Arts Preview: New Haven's Galleries and Museums Are in Fine Form For the Fall

Art can be a revolution, an unexpected and disarming splash of color. But this fall, let's applaud the stability and reliability that we often take for granted in the New Haven art gallery scene. You don't have to wait for a single famous painting to touch down on tour (as Van Gogh's "Starry Night" did in 2008.) There's glorious work to explore year in and year out. And this year, the venues deserve as much attention as the art on their walls.

The end result will be an exhibition where the artist is allowed to experience themselves fully with no limitations.

  11. Summer Festivals 2012: Bridgeport Arts Fest at McLevy Green

Last year, the Bridgeport Arts Fest really hit its stride. Thousands roamed the streets of downtown Bridgeport taking in the sounds of local bands, eating a variety of locally-made foods and buying art directly from its creators, many of whom live and/or work down the street in the Read's Artspace. Or the American Fabrics building. Or Gallery 305K. The days of cracking jokes at Bridgeport are officially over. (And I've cracked quite a few myself, though as a Bridgeport-native I can do that.) If you're an artist in Southwestern Connecticut, Bridgeport is where you'll find the resources you need. And you can see for yourself what all those artists-in-the-know have been up to all year. The exact lineup is still being solidified, but head to bridgeportartsfest.com to get the very latest info.

Artspace is winding down three separate exhibits this Thursday. It’s worth heading over during the final hours that the works are on display. The main one was devised in the space, all three are community-minded, and a collaborative glow simply emanates from the joint.
