Pocahontas

Pocahontas (c. 1595 ¿ bur. March 21, 1617) was a Native American woman who is believed by many to have saved Captain John Smith of Jamestown from execution by her people. She was a daughter of Chief Powhatan, the Indian leader who ruled the Tidewater region of Virginia. Her formal names were Matoaka and Amonute; 'Pocahontas' was a childhood nickname referring to her lighthearted temperament. She married an Englishman, John Rolfe, and went by the name Rebecca while in London, where she became a celebrity in the last year of her life.  Show more »
